The problem of mold growth on clothing and fabrics is not new and usually, we throw away clothes that have mold considering them dirty uncleanable things. Throwing away your favorite clothes because of mold is heart renting however you should rethink dropping them off in the dump because you can latterly remove mold from them. It is beneficial for health to remove mold from clothes to have a healthy respiratory and digestive system that may be at stake with mold. Molds are surprisingly removable. Removal is also essential to maintain fabric quality. Though you can remove the mold using a washing machine however not all machines are equally beneficial for this.
How Mold Grows on Fabrics
The damp place is ideal for mold growth. Natural fibres are hygroscopic they absorb enough moisture and absorb water too quickly. So high humidity, poor ventilation and warm weather support mold growth. Moreover, dirty laundry that is not dried properly is heaven for mold. This is the reason dryers and washers advertise cleaning and drying at an exceptional scale.
Can Washing Machines Remove Mold?
This is indeed a very important and perhaps mostly asked question. The answer is yes, they do but usually, one normal cycle is not enough for this. You need to use specific detergents to remove this. Usually, the ones with vinegar, baking soda or bleaching agents can remove mold.
Combination Approach:
So, it is obvious that simple washing is not enough for the mold removal process. A combination approach is one in which you wash using different combinations i.e. drying clothes properly and then cleaning with different solutions including bleach diluted water vinegar baking soda etc.
Limitations Of Washing Machines In Removing Mold?
There are certain limitations in mold removal. Some of them are discussed below.
High temperatures are one of the methods to clean mold. However, this can damage the clothes too. So, one should use hot water considering its effectiveness. On the other side too, low temperatures usually used in homes are not enough to kill mold. So, the use of temperature is the tricky part of mold removal.
Washing moldy clothes in a machine increases its risk of spread especially when the washing machine is not properly washed.
Deep penetration of mold is another reason for thorough cleaning. Usually, molds penetrate deeper into the fabric which needs tough washing and rubbing. This tough washing can damage clothes more deeply.
So, mold are necessary to be removed from clothes to reuse clothes as you can`t always throw them. Moreover, if you observe mold anywhere on cloth you should take prompt action to remove them so they won`t spread. However, they are very tricky to remove as they are not removed using normal washing agents you need to use some formula i.e. mixture of vinegar or baking soda. Similarly washing machine removal helps in removing them but they never remove 100%. You need to use some combination method or use of hot water. Moreover, you need to wash the machine toughly once you wash molded clothes from them.
